Overview

Nestled at 1,041 metres above sea level in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country, Ella is a small town that has become one of the island’s most popular destinations. The combination of spectacular mountain scenery, tea plantations stretching to the horizon, cascading waterfalls, and a relaxed atmosphere makes Ella irresistible to travellers.

The journey to Ella — particularly by train — is often cited as one of the highlights of any Sri Lankan itinerary.

The Train Journey

The railway line from Kandy to Ella is widely regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. The train winds through lush tea estates, past waterfalls, through tunnels, and over bridges, including the famous Nine Arches Bridge. The journey from Kandy takes approximately 6 hours.

What to See

Nine Arches Bridge

Built entirely of stone and brick without a single piece of steel during the British colonial era, the Nine Arches Bridge (also called the Bridge in the Sky) is Ella’s most iconic landmark. The best views are from the hillside above the bridge, especially when a train passes over it.

Little Adam’s Peak

A relatively easy 45-minute hike rewarded with panoramic views of Ella Gap and the surrounding mountains. The trail winds through tea plantations and is accessible for most fitness levels. Start early for the best light.

Ella Rock

A more challenging hike (2–3 hours one way) through tea estates and forest to a summit with breathtaking views. The trail can be confusing so a guide is recommended for first-timers.

Ravana Falls

Located about 6 km from Ella town, this 25-metre waterfall is one of the widest in Sri Lanka. Named after the mythical king Ravana from the Ramayana, there is a small pool at the base where you can swim.

Tea Factory Visits

Several tea factories near Ella offer tours where you can see the process from fresh leaf to finished tea. Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory is one of the most popular.

Tips for Visitors

  • Take the train: The Ella-Kandy railway is a must-do. Book reserved seats at least a few days in advance.
  • Nine Arches timing: Check train schedules to time your visit when a train crosses the bridge (roughly every 2 hours).
  • Start hikes early: Morning mist burns off by 10 AM, and the views are clearest in the early hours.
  • Stay 2–3 nights: Ella rewards those who slow down and take their time.
  • Bring layers: The temperature can be cool, especially in the morning and evening.
